Junk removal is priced by how much room your things take up in the truck, what those things are, and how hard they are to get out of the house. One recliner from a ground floor living room costs far less than a full truck of soggy basement boxes carried up a narrow staircase. Most haulers also have a minimum charge for showing up at all. The honest way to get a price is to show the hauler what has to go, in person or in photos, and get a fixed number before anyone lifts anything.
Here is what moves that number, and how to tell a fair quote from a vague one.
How do you price out junk removal?
How much of the truck you fill
Volume is the main driver. Most junk removal is priced by the share of the truck a load takes up: a few items, a quarter load, half, three quarters, a full truck. A bulky couch takes the same space whether it weighs forty pounds or a hundred, so space comes first.
What the items are and what they weigh
Weight matters for dense loads. Roofing, tile, concrete, soil, wet drywall and stacks of books fill a truck to its weight limit long before they fill it to the top, and the disposal facility charges by weight. A light load of cardboard and old furniture and a heavy load of remodel debris can look the same size and cost very different amounts to dump.
Stairs, distance and access
The carry is part of the job. A basement with a tight turn at the bottom of the stairs, a third floor apartment near Western, or a hillside house in Sehome or Sudden Valley with forty steps down to the street all take more time and more hands than a garage that opens onto the driveway. Tell us about the access when you ask for a price, and the quote will already account for it.
Taking things apart
Some things will not fit through the door in one piece: a sectional that came in before the hallway was remodelled, a basement bar, a bed frame bolted together, a hot tub. Disassembly or cutting adds time. See how to get rid of an old hot tub for one of the bigger examples.
Items with their own disposal fees
Some items cost more to dispose of properly than to haul. Refrigerators and freezers need their refrigerant recovered. Mattresses, tires and some electronics carry their own handling or recycling charges at the facilities that take them. If your load includes any of these, expect them to be listed as separate line items on a fair quote.
The minimum charge
Every hauler has a cost just to send a truck and a crew to your house: fuel, time on the road, and the trip to the transfer station. That is why one small item can cost more per piece than a half load. If you have one thing to go, look around the garage for anything else before you book.
What is the average cost of waste removal?
We give a fixed price after seeing your things or seeing photos of them. That price covers the loading, the hauling and the disposal, and it does not change once we start unless you add more.
Is it cheaper to rent a dumpster or hire a junk removal company?
It depends on how much you have, how fast you want it gone, and who is doing the lifting.
When a dumpster makes sense
A dumpster can make sense for a long remodel where debris comes out a little every day for weeks, and you or your contractor are doing the loading. You pay for the container and the time it sits there, and you load it yourself.
When hauling makes sense
Hiring a crew usually makes more sense when the stuff is already sitting there, when it is heavy or awkward, or when it is spread across a house, a basement and a shed. You pay for the space your things take up, the crew does all the carrying, and it is gone the same visit. There is no container on the driveway for a week, no permit question about putting one on the street, and no neighbours quietly adding their own junk to it overnight.
Many Bellingham driveways are steep or narrow, and some streets have no room for a container at all. That alone settles the question for a lot of homeowners.
What’s the cheapest way to remove junk?
- Sell or give away what still works. Furniture and appliances in good shape often go quickly to someone who will pick them up. Our guide to getting rid of old furniture and mattresses covers the options.
- Put it all in one place. Gathering everything in the garage or by the door shortens the carry, which shortens the job.
- Do it in one visit. One full load costs less than three small ones with three minimum charges.
- Keep hazardous items out. Paint, chemicals and fuel are not part of a junk load and have their own drop off. See what junk removal will not take.
- Send photos first. A clear photo of each room or pile gets you a firm number without a site visit.
How to calculate junk removal prices fairly
A quote you can trust names a fixed price for what you showed, says whether loading, sweeping up and disposal are included, lists any item with its own disposal fee, and tells you what happens if the job turns out bigger or smaller than expected. If a hauler will only give you a number once the truck is loaded, ask why.
